Sergio Busquets’ decision to depart Barcelona after 18 years of service will leave a massive void at the base of midfield, and it’s going to be a big ask for a new signing to repeat the feats of the legendary Spaniard at Camp Nou.

The La Liga champions have been linked with a number of midfielders, including Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat, in recent weeks. The Morocco international enjoyed a brilliant 2022 World Cup. But still, there are concerns about whether he’s good enough to shield the backline of one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

İlkay Gündoğan – another midfielder on the club’s radar – has consistently performed at the highest level and will lead Manchester City’s midfield against Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night. But he will turn 33 two months into the new season.

The latest name to be mentioned as a potential candidate to replace Busquets might just be the perfect signing for the Blaugrana this summer.

Barcelona keen on signing Bayern midfielder to replace Busquets

As per Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish giants are very interested in signing Joshua Kimmich, who’s allegedly thinking about leaving Bayern Munich. Last summer, Robert Lewandowski, who has spearheaded Barcelona’s attack in the title-winning campaign with more than 20 league goals, left the German outfit to join Xavi’s project.

It is added that Xavi is a fan of the 28-year-old midfielder, who is on the verge of lifting his eighth Bundesliga title. Barca know they have to convince the German international as soon as possible.

However, it’s not going to be easy for the hierarchy at Barcelona to convince Bayern bosses to sanction the departure of their key player for the second straight summer. Lewandowski entered the final 12 months of his contract during the negotiations last summer, but Kimmich is tied to the Bundesliga leaders until 2025.
