Culers around the world were given a bit of great news recently as Barcelona have reportedly finalized a deal to sign İlkay Gündoğan.
The 32-year-old German, fresh off winning the Champions League with Manchester City, has agreed to a two-year contract until 2025, with the option to extend it by one year. This is an amazing signing, one that is not only helpful on the sporting side of things but also economically, as the midfielder will join on a free transfer.
As previously stated, the contract will be for a maximum of three years (by which time he will be 35). While not quite confirmed, the salary numbers have been reported at around €9million net per year.
This is a very interesting move for Xavi’s Barça, as Gündoğan is an extremely talented and versatile player with an eye for goal, something that has been lacking in recent years from the midfield in Barcelona. But apart from this, it’s a good sign that Barça are getting back into the transfer market the right way.
Barcelona are showing encouraging signs in the transfer market
This signing, along with the potential arrival of Vitor Roque and the rumored conversations around Arda Güler, shows that the Catalan outfit is back in business with some smart moves. The already completed signing of Iñigo Martínez at the back just adds to a strong start to the summer for Barcelona. Of course, sales must take place, but it’s only a matter of time before some exits are formalised.
The signing gives Xavi a lot of options in the midfield, although reports are that Xavi has been adamant he needs one more player at defensive midfield. So far, however, Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, and Gündoğan are a very strong core to build around. It gives the squad depth to cover for potential injuries, as well as some room to experiment.
The leadership and experience that Gündoğan will bring will no doubt help the youngsters, and there’s little doubt he’ll score double-digit goals to boot.
