Barcelona officially confirmed the signing of Iñigo Martinez this morning, in a move that has long been rumoured.

The veteran centre-back will reinforce the backline for Xavi and will bring plenty of experience having appeared in 357 La Liga games for Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao.

He will join the Catalan giants on a free transfer.

Barcelona released a statement following the signing:

"“An agreement has been reached between FC Barcelona and Inigo Martinez for the player to join the Club after his contract with Athletic Club ended.“The player is set to sign a two-year deal that ends on June 30, 2025, with the release clause set at 400 million euro.“The Club will provide further details about Inigo Martinez’s presentation as a new first-team player in due course.”"

The 6-foot left-footed centre-half is considered a strong aerial player who’s also comfortable on the ball, either playing it out from the back or carrying it into midfield.

A combative player, Martinez will add some steel to the Barca backline and will be looking to compete for a first-team place over the summer.

Martinez will also become the first player to play for Barça and Athletic Club in the last 15 years.

Speaking to the official website after the signing, Martinez said:

"“I come with a lot of enthusiasm, with a lot of excitement to be able to contribute everything I have. And to join this great club, it means a lot to me.It’s been many years, but finally, I’ve made the leap in my career that any player desires.I’ve played many games. I have a lot of experience on the field. My goal will be to try and lead the defence.”"

Martinex will be joining the likes of Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen, Jules Koundé and Eric Garcia in the heart of the Barca defence.

Clement Lenglet is still a Barca player, but as we mentioned yesterday, the French defender is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks.
