Lamine Yamal is expected to sign a new five-year contract to stay at Barcelona this month. The contract can’t be signed until the young forward celebrates his 16th birthday on the 13th of July, but all the details have already been agreed.

This will come as a great relief to Barcelona and their fans, with major European clubs sniffing around the extremely talented forward.

Yamal became the youngest player in Barca’s history to make their first-team debut when he appeared in a 4-0 win against Real Betis last year aged 15 years, 9 months and 16 days.

Xavi had invited Yamal to practice with the first-team squad in September 2022 along with a number of youth players, and his mature performances impressed the Barca manager. Enough to feature him in a game at such a young age.

Barcelona expect big things from Yamal

Yamal has been constantly compared to club great Lionel Messi based on his ability with the ball at his feet. A strong dribbler with great vision, the La Massia product can play as a striker, attacking midfielder or right winger.

According to the report, everyone at the Catalan club has blind faith in Yamal, from the president and coaching staff to the sports management team.

With the club having missed out on Turkish wonderkid Arda Guler to Real Madrid, some are betting on Yamal to make an impact in La Liga this season.

The reality of the financial situation at Barca means the club will need to look to their academy to fill more roles, fortunately, it’s one of the finest academies in world football.

With that comes certain expectations. Yamal is represented by Jorge Mendes, and according to Mundo Deportivo, both sides have already signed off on Yamal’s first professional contract, will see him receive a significant raise on his current salary.

Yamal is expected to be on the US tour this season and will be working with the senior quad through the pre-season.
