Barcelona is looking to trim their squad ahead of the pre-season tour to the USA and one name that is likely to be heading out the door is Nico González.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Valencia and it was always expected that he would leave the La Liga champions this summer.

According to a report by SPORT, González  will leave this summer, but only on loan.

The Barca hierarchy still rates the Coruña man and won’t sanction a permanent transfer away from the club.

There are a number of teams interested in Gonzalez and that’s hardly surprising considering the level of his play last year at Los Che. We also can’t forget that he made over 25 appearances for Barcelona back in 2021, so we’re talking about an immensely talented individual.

Nico González was given the green light to secure a move

According to multiple reports in England, Gonzalez’s agent Jorge Mendes offered Aston Villa and Wolverhampton a chance to sign the midfielder but didn’t specify that it would only be on loan.

Porto has also emerged as a strong contender for his signature with his Father stating:

“Porto is a great club and we have to be grateful because they value González, but there is still nothing about his future. We will talk in the next few days.”

The report indicated that González  was set to meet Barcelona about his future, but it seems as though he’s been given the green light to seek a move away from Camp Nou.

Some may consider this a strange move considering Xavi and Barca president Joan Laporta have both spoken about the need to strengthen the midfield area.

My read on the situation is that they want experience above all else in midfield, and while Gonzalez is a promising prospect, he needs more seasoning before being embedded into Xavi’s system.
