FC Barcelona are chasing the signature of young Arsenal midfielder Miguel Azeez, a player who made 10 appearances for Ibiza in the Segunda División last season.

Reports in England indicate that Barca is looking to secure the defensive midfielder’s signature for their B team who currently plays in the third division of Spanish football.

Azeez was a hotly tipped prospect by former Barca and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the 20-year-old hasn’t always been able to show that quality.

"“One player who I think looks really good is Miguel Azeez,” the former Arsenal striker and captain declared before leaving the Emirates in January 2022. “Miguel is going to be a great player in the future. He’s really calm and mature so I’m sure he’s got what you need to be a success and have a big career.”"

Difficult loan spells for Miguel Azeez

Sometimes being heralded so young can result in issues down the road, and Azeez has had three difficult loan spells, resulting in rumours indicating that he was sent back to Arsenal on every occasion.

In 2021 he made 6 appearances for English side Portsmouth before returning to North London. In 2022 he made 10 appearances with Ibiza before again returning to Arsenal.

Then in January 2023 he secured a loan to Championship side Wigan Athletic but made just 2 appearances before being sent back to his parent club. Reports indicate that he was also made to train with the academy side for two weeks after showing disrespect towards a coach.

His time at Wigan culminated in his brother (who plays for Reading) and his Dad arguing with Wigan manager Shaun Maloney after relegation was confirmed for the Latics.

Azeez was born in Camden to a Nigerian father and a Spanish mother but has appeared in the England youth international setup from the U16 to U20 teams.

A defensive-minded midfielder, maybe a move to FC Barcelona can finally unlock his potential.
