Barcelona have been linked with Joshua Kimmich ever since Xavi Hernandez took the reigns in Catalonia. The Bayern Munich midfielder has long been considered untouchable, but that may no longer be the case.
According to a report in the German outlet Kicker, Kimmich is no longer seen as untouchable and with just two years remaining on his contract, the 28-year-old could be sold if Bayern receive an offer that they deem acceptable.
Xavi has long held Kimmich in high regard and many see him as the perfect long-term replacement for the recently departed Sergio Busquets, but no move is imminent and if the German midfielder is to join Barca, it won’t be until next summer.
Liverpool have also long admired Kimmich and have the funds available to make a move this summer.
Kimmich has been with Barcelona since 2015 and has made over 230 appearances for the perennial winners, he’s also represented Germany 79 times.
Kimmich’s versatility is a valuable asset
Kimmich is highly regarded for his versatility, playing predominantly as a defensive midfielder or right-back. He’s also appeared as a central defender, central midfielder and deep-lying playmaker.
Technically very gifted, Kimmich is comfortable on the ball and reads the game as well as anyone in world football. He’s often in the right place at the right time and dictates plays from his defensive position.
Breaking up opposition attacks and then carrying and breaking the lines is a strength. That’s something that Xavi wants in his pivot midfielders.
It’s not all about his defensive work though, Kimmich is a good set-piece taker and crosser of the ball and can play a more attacking game when asked.
Kimmich is a highly respected figure in Germany and doesn’t often speak about his future. However, he has historically said that Xavi acted as an inspiration for his career, so I imagine playing under him is appealing for the Rotwell-born man.
