Barcelona are working on a major signing during this transfer window
Earlier today we reported that Barcelona were willing to negotiate with PSG on the transfer of Ousmane Dembélé. Since that report, we’ve had a number of conflicting reports on the situation, which we will detail below. However, at the same time, a report in SPORT indicated that Barca is confident of securing a ‘bomb’ signing before the transfer deadline on the 1st of September.
There is absolutely no insight given into who that could be, but the article references João Félix, the Atlético Madrid striker who professed his love for Barcelona only weeks ago. Is that the major signing that SPORT alludes to?
First on the Dembélé situation. We’ve dissected every single report we’ve seen (and there have been a lot), and this is what we understand about the situation as things stand.
Dembélé has a €50 million release clause until the 1st of August, at which point it becomes €100 million.
PSG have an interest in triggering that €50 mill release clause and has long held an admiration for the French winger.
At this point, PSG have not made their intentions clear to Barcelona, no negotiation has taken place and PSG and Dembélé have yet to hold any talks about a possible transfer.
Dembélé is happy at Barcelona, would like to continue with the La Liga champions, and is focused on both the pre-season and the contract extension that Barca and his representatives are currently negotiating.
You’re going to hear a lot of noise around Dembélé over the next 24-48 hours, a lot of it will be absolute nonsense.
Who could this major signing be for Barcelona?
The report in SPORT indicates that Barca is in no rush to get this major signing completed and it’s based on some outgoings with the Catalan club. That’s something we’ve spoken about a number of times here at EB.
There are three names that come to mind when you think about a statement signing. João Félix is certainly one of them, although reports indicated that Xavi wasn’t sure how well the young attacker fit into his system.
The next is Bernardo Silva and we know the Manchester City man would welcome a move to the Blaugrana. He fits the profile of what Xavi is looking for, and he would certainly be a statement signing having just won the treble in England.
The final name is João Cancelo, the Manchester City right-back is considered one of the best players at his position in world football, but he’s fallen out of favour with Pep at City. Barcelona have made upgrading that right-back position a priority this summer.
Or maybe, it’s someone we haven’t even thought about.
