Barcelona tracking 20-year-old Paraguayan winger
The Barcelona scouting network is one of the biggest in European football, and while they scout nearly every country with a professional football league, they’re extremely active in Brazil, which is evident with the signing of Vitor Roque from Athletico Paranaense.
According to Javier Gascon of Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona is currently tracking Botafogo winger Matías Segovia, affectionately known as ‘Segovinha’.
Born in Caaguazú, Paraguay, Segovia joined Brazilian side Botafogo from Guaraní in his home country. An extremely skilful player, he’s yet to find the back of the net for the Brazilian side although he has registered one assist.
Although he’s played exclusively as a right midfielder this season, he has played multiple positions over the course of his career, including as an attacking central midfielder and left winger.
Technically very gifted, Segovia is extremely small at 5’5 and extremely slim. As talented as he is, Barca may be waiting for him to develop physically in order to stand up to the physicality of La Liga.
Segovia also attracting attention from the Premier League and Ligue 1
Despite his lack of height, his ability on the ball and his knack for making things happen has attracted the attention of several teams across Europe.
The above report links Crystal Palance from England and Lyon from France as potential suitors. Although Segovia has only played 12 times for Brazilian Serie A-leading Botafoga, teams may be waiting for him to establish himself a little more.
According to the report, Barcelona has been tracking Segovia since 2019 when he helped Paraguay defeat Argentina to advance to the quarter-finals of the U19 U-17 World Cup in Brazil.
At this point, the interest is limited to tracking the player as he makes his way in Brazil. As far as we’re aware there have been no official approaches and no contact between the club and the player.
In the Brazilian Serie A so far this year, Segovia has made 12 appearances, with every single one of them coming from the bench, there’s still a lot of development to do before he can consider making the step up to one of the major European leagues.
