Barcelona given deadline for reaching agreement with Manchester City on Bernardo Silva deal
For the second summer in a row, the proposed transfer of Bernardo Silva to Barcelona is dragging on through the summer, but the Portuguese playmaker is quickly running out of patience and is close to signing a contract extension with Manchester City.
As revealed yesterday, Barca made their first official approach for Silva, offering City a one-year loan option with the obligation to purchase for £50 million, a deal that was reportedly scoffed at in England.
Although talk out of Manchester has consistently reaffirmed the club’s desire to keep Silva, City manager Pep Guardiola left the door open for a possible exit recently when he confirmed that he never wants to keep players who don’t want to be at the club, before continuing on Silva:
"“If someone wants him, he’ll get on a plane and come here to talk to our sporting director and our CEO. In any case, we haven’t received a suitable offer yet,”"
Bernardo Silva’s patience is running out with Barcelona
Today a report in Mundo Deportivo indicates that Bernardo Silva’s camp is a little confused by Barca’s lack of action.
All summer we’ve heard that Xavi and the Barca management team have prioritised Silva as their marquee signing, yet the first official approach only materialised yesterday.
As far as we know, neither Deco nor Mateu Alemany have made their way to England to negotiate with Aitor ‘Txiki’ Begiristain, Manchester City’s sporting director.
So while words are nice, actions are better.
Silva has a very competitive contract renewal offer on the table from City. Pep played him for the entire game against Arsenal at the weekend, a match that the Gunners ended up winning on penalties, lifting the community shield.
Silva will give Barca “one or two more days” before putting pen to paper on his extension. The former Benfica and Monaco man wants Barca, but he won’t wait forever.
We all know that Barcelona is facing financial uncertainty, and the lack of approach may be entirely based on it not being feasible this season, remember we are yet to register the signings we’ve already made and the contract extensions agreed.
The clock is ticking, and if I were a better man…I’d say that Barcelona will come up short in the Silva sweepstakes for the second summer in a row.
