Youth can’t always be expected to save the game

With the starting XI struggling to find a breakthrough, Xavi turned to the kids. First, he introduced Abde to inject some pace into the side and that worked immediately with the Moroccan having the beating of his man, albeit a lack of end product.

He then introduced Fati and Yamal late in the game, and while both got on the ball and showed a willingness to try and push the tempo, neither was able to find that magic touch…although Yamal did find Fati in thee box for a great opportunity that was blazed over.

This is not a criticism of any of the young players, this is just a reminder that young players are largely unpredictable and while they all looked like world-beaters in the pre-season, once the lights come on for real it’s a very different game.

Fati is being linked with a move away, but I hope he stays as he still has a game-changing ability. You just can’t expect them to always change the game, the starting XI need to hand over the reigns with the game in control on occasions.

Last night was a disappointing result, but it’s game one of a very long season and not being able to score against Getafe shouldn’t come as a surprise. That’s the fourth game in a row away at Getafe where Barca have failed to find the net, it’s becoming a bit of an annoying habit.
