Xavi made it clear to Sergiño Dest that he didn’t see the USMNT player as an option ahead of the new La Liga season. Now Dest has a new home for 2023/34, with Barcelona agreeing with PSV to send the right back to the Eredivisie where he made a name for himself with Ajax.

The official channels confirmed the move early Monday morning, and it’s believed that PSV will cover 50% of his wages for the season and hold a €10 million buy option at the end of the loan. The option is just that, an option, and is not a mandatory obligation to purchase.

Dest has made 72 appearances (56 starting) since joining Barcelona back in 2020, but will now be spending the second year in a row out on loan, having spent the 2022/23 campaign in Italy with AC Milan.

Dest will be hoping to regain his form and confidence at PSV

Barcelona and Dest will be hoping this loan spell is a little more fruitful considering Dest made just 8 appearances for I Rossoneri last year.

Barcelona were believed to be open to a permanent transfer but considering Dest’s poor form last year and on Barcelona’s pre-season tour of the USA, no suitors came forward.

Dest was considered one of the more exciting defenders in Europe when he was at Ajax and will be hoping that a move back to the Eredivisie will spark a resurgence.

It’s important to remember that Dest is still just 22, and has plenty of time to develop his game.

PSV will face Rangers tomorrow in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying campaign, and having finished 2nd last year, they’ll be hoping to do one better this year.

There will be one familiar face at PSV with Dest set to re-join his former Barcelona teammate Luuk de Jong.

Barcelona hoping to secure Cancelo deal this week

Barcelona are still working on signing Joao Cancelo from Manchester City with Fabrizio Romano indicating that while a deal has yet to be agreed, it is inching closer.

It’s believed that Cancelo is only interested in joining Barca, having spent the second half of last season on loan with Bayern Munich. With the Portuguese international only willing to negotiate with Barca, it does give the La Liga champions a leg up in negotiations.

With Ronald Araujo injured, Jules Kounde played at right-back against Cadiz, but Barca will be hoping to get Cancel signed ahead of tougher matches coming up.
