Clement Lenglet’s departure from Barcelona has dragged on. Remember, he was given an extra week at the end of the summer break to finalise his move, with the French defender not expecting to take part in any pre-season training with Barca.

The reported move to Tottenham never happened, and despite interest from Marseille and Saudi Arabia, Lenglet is still a Barca player heading into the final days of the transfer window.

A permanent move away now seems impossible, instead, it looks as though Lenglet will be heading to Seville on loan, according to a report this morning in Mundo Deportivo.

Loan move back to where Lenglet made a name for himself in Spain

A loan move to Seville makes a lot of sense for everyone involved.

Lenglet joined Seville back in 2017 from French club Nancy, before moving on to Barcelona following a dominating debut season in La Liga.

Things haven’t worked out for Lenglet in Catalonia, but he has made over 100 appearances for Barca, so the transfer was initially very fruitful.

Seville has got off to the worst possible start in La Liga, sitting bottom of the table with 0 points from 3 games. They’ve also conceded more goals than any other team in the league (8) and need some leadership on that back line.

According to the report by Mundo, the loan deal is progressing with one outstanding decision to be made. How much of Lenglet’s €8 million net salary is Seville willing to pay?

Considering their start to the season, I imagine Seville is pretty desperate for a player of Lenglet’s quality.

Clement Leglet is open to returning to Seville

Earlier this pre-season it was believed that Lenglet preferred a transfer back to the Premier League with Tottenham, but Daniel Levy failed to make an offer that Barca deemed acceptable.

It’s also believed that new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou isn’t as keen on Lenglet as his predecessor Antonio Conte.

Barca believed they had found a suitor in Saudi Arabia, but Lenglet refused to leave for the Saudi Pro League, instead preferring to stay in Europe.

It’s now believed that Lenglet would be open to a move back to Seville considering his history with the club. He knows the team, the area and the training facilities, and as a result, won’t have a long period of adaption. It also allows him to continue in Europe, as well as European competition.

Despite the poor start to the season for Seville, the side are in the Champions League this year.

Hopefully, an agreement can be reached and Lenglet will be back playing soon. It will also help Barcelona if they can save a significant portion of his salary.
