The summer transfer window may have come to an end, but the rumour mill never stops turning when it comes to Barcelona. Although we’re only a handful of days into September, there are reports on who Barca may target in January, and one name to watch is 20-year-old Uruguyan Fabricio Diaz, a defensive midfielder who currently plays for Liverpool Montevideo.

According to football journalist Roger Torello, the young ‘pearl’ could be available for less than €9 million euros. Considering the financial issues at Barcelona, that would be a welcome addition, and it’s likely that Diaz is seen as the potential replacement for Oriol Romeu, who was the low-cost addition to bolster the midfielder this summer.

Despite being just 20, Diaz has already made 106 appearances for Liverpool Montevideo, which has also led to him making 32 appearances for the U20 national team. In Uruguay, he’s seen as a star of the future, defensively robust with real skill on the ball.

National success will lead to greater things for Fabricio Diaz

Back in October 2022, he was named in the Uruguayan 55-man preliminary squad for the World Cup in Qatar, and while he didn’t make the final cut, it shows that he’s on the right course.

He was also named as a captain of the Uruguayan side that won the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina. The fact that he was named captain speaks to his game, leadership and respect within the youth organization.

Diaz is not yet the finished product and will need some development, but there is no better place to develop your football than at Barcelona. With the addition of Romeu, it also gives Barcelona a 2-3 year window to find his replacement, which allows them to bring someone on slowly and develop them within the first-team at key opportunities.

Right now this is all rumour, but Diaz would be an exciting signing for the future of the football club.
