Midfielders

Oriol Romeu – 6

Not his best match in this one. He looked isolated at times, especially defensively. It was often Romeu and the two center backs against 4 Celta attackers, which didn’t bode well. He did, however, make some key defensive plays inside the box, and probably saved a goal or two in the process. Overall, did what he could, but not quite enough for anything higher.

Frenkie de Jong – 7

He didn’t play much, as he appeared to pick up a knock and was replaced by Gavi early on. However, when he did play, he looked good. He had a couple of pretty line-splitting passes, particularly one looping ball that João Félix just couldn’t quite control. Creatively, he was good. Defensively, though, he certainly left something to be desired.

Gündoğan – 7

He played just about every midfield position in this one, but he started in a more advanced role. He wasn’t too prominent early on. In the second half, he began to drop deeper, mostly replacing Cancelo in the deeper midfield areas. Gündoğan is clearly a very intelligent player, and there were moments of that in this one. I’m sure he would’ve liked to be a bit more involved, though.

Gavi – 8

The best midfield performance of the day belonged to Gavi. He picked up a quick yellow (of course) but after that, he did nothing but get better. He injected some energy into the match and circulated the ball well, especially in the second half. He’s an incredibly important player, and his ball into the box was inch-perfect for Cancelo’s game-winner.
