FC Barcelona had a chance to solidify their position at the top of La Liga last night but were unable to find the winning goal in an error-strewn 2-2 draw against Mallorca.

Xavi was asked about the defensive performance after the game, and the Barca manager was left unimpressed after his side gifted Mallorca their opening goal due to an errant pass from goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

Barcelona had one of La Liga’s stingiest defences last season but has already conceded 8 goals in just 7 games. They conceded just 20 goals in 38 games last season, which shows how disappointing the start of the season has been for the backline.

Xavi was left unimpressed with the performances of his defensive players:

"“The problem has been that they have advanced on the scoreboard due to our error. Then, when we were better, another mistake of ours led us to the break losing. These improper errors cannot occur again. But we have generated. We have had very clear opportunities. There are two clear, glaring errors. That is why we must row more than necessary.”"

Work to do for the defensive system at FC Barcelona

Right now it seems as though Barcelona have a mentality where they believe they’ll just score more than the opposition.

Having conceded 4 goals against Celta Vigo and Mallorca, they’ve been fortunate to walk away with four points.

While the attacking talent is evident, your defensive responsibilities can’t be optional. Cancelo and Balde both disappointed last year and the Inigo Martinez/Ronald Araujo combination looked very sluggish in terms of their defensive structure.

The big physical style of Mallorca seemed to impact the Barcelona backline, with powerhouse Vedat Muriqi proving a difficult matchup.

Oriol Romeu also seemed to struggle without Frekie de Jong who’s out for up to 7 weeks with an ankle injury.

It’s still early in the season, but there is a lot to work on over the coming weeks if Barcelona want to maintain their challenge for the La Liga title.
