The Joãos moved to the Catalan capital on transfer deadline day last window and have since solidified their spot in the squad with bewildering performances. Both players have combined for five goals and assisted thrice in just five appearances for FC Barcelona. Xavi would definitely like to have such players around for longer than a season, but it’s not as easy as it seems.

Cancelo and Felix were expected to move to the club permanently, but Barça’s financial issues forced them to secure the players on loan.

Both of the players had similar reasons for leaving their parent club, as both of them fell out of favour under their bosses. Felix had disputes with Atleti boss Simeone, whereas at Man City Guardiola apparently wanted Cancelo to change his playing style.

Deco’s plan for the Portuguese stars

Barcelona’s Sporting Director Deco recently had some words to say about the pairs’ retention and Felix’s ability

"“The decision is a matter for the coach as well. He is the one in charge. Not only them, but Gündogan, Romeu, Iñigo… all those who have arrived this year are doing well,”“It is too early to see if they will stay the year that is coming. A loan was the only thing we could do. Now we have to think about the present. Little by little we will see. We are happy with both of them.”“I have known him[Felix] since he started in Portugal. He has always been different, with a different quality. I am happy that he is with us,”“There was a lot of talk about his price and little about his game. The important thing is that he is happy. He contributes at a level game and locker room.”"

Felix has faced a lot of criticism regarding his transfer fees and his performances for Atletico in comparison. Nevertheless, both the players had joined their parent club for a significant transfer fee and even if they won’t play there anymore, making the deal permanent is going to be an extravagant affair, as detailed by SPORT recently.
