When Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona to join PSG back in 2021, he never got the sendoff his career deserved. It was a messy time (excuse the pun) and the financial restrictions at the Catalan club caused a lot of friction between fans, management and players.

Two years later the great Barca legend finds himself playing in the MLS with Inter Miami. His arrival in the MLS has catapulted the league into the headlines around the world, an impact not felt since Pele signed for the New York Cosmos all those years ago.

Messi hasn’t lost a step, scoring 11 goals in 12 games and securing Inter Miami’s first trophy with the Leagues Cup success in August.

Before he landed in the States, there were rumours that he would return to Barcelona this summer, but the financial situation never allowed it. Sometimes it’s good to not dwell on the past, instead moving forward and appreciating what came before.

Inter Miami is planning a tribute game with Barcelona for Lionel Messi

Messi never having the chance to say goodbye to the fans after two decades at the club, a club where he made over 500 appearances and scored over 450 goals is a mistake that needs rectifying, and that’s exactly what’s happening

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas has assured everyone, Messi included, that he’ll do absolutely everything to make that game happen.

"“I gave [Messi] my commitment that I will do everything possible in the coming years so that he has the opportunity to say goodbye to his fans in Barcelona,” Mas told Marca on Monday.“Inter Miami will go [to Barcelona] or we will have some kind of match. Messi’s departure from Barcelona was not to his liking, he could not say goodbye to his club, which welcomed him as a child, and I think the circumstances were not what Lionel wanted.”"

It’s still unclear when the game will occur. The most likely situation is Inter Miami head to Barcelona in 2025-26 for the Joan Gamper Trophy match, the curtain raiser on the season that will see Barca open the revamped Spotify Camp Nou stadium.
