Ever since Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona, there has been talk of his eventual return. Part of it is based on his legendary status, and part of it is based on us not being able to let go.

The way it ended with Messi at Barcelona was less than ideal, we all know the financial situation which forced the split, so we don’t need to go over that again.

He’s often spoken about the move to PSG and how that wasn’t what he wanted, but it was impossible for him to stay at Barcelona considering the financial climate and the hole we’d dug ourselves into.

Earlier this summer there were some rumours of his return on a permanent basis, but that was deemed impossible, again due to the financial limitations that we had at the time. Earlier this week it was reported that Inter Miami and FC Barcelona would contest a friendly at some point to allow Messi to say goodbye properly.

But maybe there is another way for him to say goodbye.

Could Lionel Messi return to Barcelona on loan in January?

One potential situation has been mentioned recently, and that’s Messi’s return on loan during the January transfer window if Inter Miami miss out on the playoffs. They’re currently 5 points outside the playoffs with 3 games remaining, and Messi has been absent with a leg injury recently, reducing their chances of a late push.

Financially this would still be a very difficult transfer to accomplish, and it would likely mean it’s the only bit of business Barcelona did…they’d also likely need an outgoing or two.

Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas has often said that he wouldn’t stand in Messi’s way if a chance to return to Barcelona was ever on the table. Having spent 17 years in Catalonia, you can see why Messi is so keen to say goodbye.
