Barcelona's defensive planning just took an enormous turn in the space of 24 hours. Only days after a move for Alessandro Bastoni was blocked by Hansi Flick, Deco has secured a key internal solution.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Andreas Christensen and Barcelona have officially reached full agreement on a two year contract renewal to keep the Danish defender at Camp Nou until June 2028, ending a tense period of negotiation.
The 30-year-old's original rejected offer from March prompted mass speculation of him departing as a free agent. However, the latest round of talks proved successful, providing a massive boost to the club's financial engineering and squad depth.
Accepting the financial reality
The huge concession from Christensen has been his willingness to accept a vastly reduced salary. Due to limitations of Barcelona's salary cap, the deal sees his old basic salary almost halved and replaced by an incentivised, performance related structure, increasing if the Dane stays fit and hits certain appearance milestones.
This is a massive act of good will from the former Chelsea man, who was only too keen to stay in Catalonia with his family and actively refused more lucrative proposals from clubs elsewhere in Europe and the Saudi Pro League.
Hansi Flick's drive
For all his injury woes in the last two seasons (only 17 appearances this year due to a partial tear of his ACL), Flick has been and is still a huge admirer of Christensen's technical capabilities.
With the club moving on from Bastoni purely because of tactical fit, particularly around recovery pace. A versatile, proven operator was crucial and the former Chelsea man is now an elite squad player for Flick, capable of slotting in centrally or even anchoring the midfield as a defensive pivot.
The board values the Danish centre-back for his professionalism and understanding, having made similar compromises before for registration purposes, now medically cleared and signed up he will focus on getting fit for pre-season to compete for a role in Flick's starting setup.
