Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona match preview

The La Liga title race could not be any tighter meaning, even at this early stage of the season, this top of the table clash could be crucial. Barcelona have won 13 of the 15 matches they have played this season, but one could certainly argue that they have lost both times they've taken on elite-level opposition, so very much have a point to prove.

Hansi Flick's team looked simply unstoppable, prior to back-to-back defeats against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and then Real Madrid in the Clásico. Since the latter, the Blaugrana have bounced back with successive victories, steamrollering Alavés 6-1, before Tuesday's comfortable 3-0 win over Aston Villa; Lamine Yamal curling home, before Raphinha struck twice.

Back in La Liga, having won ten out of 11, Barça are still top, but both Madrid clubs are closing in. So, can the Spanish champions claim a statement victory on Sunday night?

As for Atlético Madrid, in recent seasons, slow starts have all but ruled them out of the title race before one ever truly began. This time round however, that is very much not the case. Los Colchoneros come into this one following seven successive league wins, most recently beating Levante 2-0 on Halloween; Álex Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone on target in Valencia.

In mid-week, Diego Simeone's side were narrowly beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, leaving los Rojiblancos on just four points after four games, albeit with favourable fixtures to come. Nevertheless, it was clear that this clash with Barça is Atleti's priority, knowing that victory would see them go top of La Liga, something no one could have forecast even a few weeks ago. Whatever happens, this is not a match you want to miss!

Having missed the previous five matches due to injury, Koke came off the bench in mid-week, meaning Diego Simeone pretty much has everyone to choose from. Ademola Lookman is the most-likely man to start who did not against Bayern Munich, albeit Álex Baena's form means he cannot be dropped.

A lot of the spotlight will of course be on Julián Álvarez. He publicly wanted to join Barcelona in the summer, a move that never materialised, so it feels written that he will have a big role to play.

In a massive blow for Barça, Rodri suffered a hamstring injury against Aston Villa, meaning he is sidelined. In fairness, Frenkie de Jong is not a bad deputy. At the back though, Hansi Flick has almost no options from which to choose, given that Xavi Espart, Andreas Christensen, Jules Koundé and Eric García are all sidelined.

Thus, 20 year old Brian Fariñas has started the last two matches, chosen over forgotten man Alejandro Balde. In attack, Lamine Yamal has twice scored at the Metropolitano, so will he be the hero again?

Predicted Line-ups
