According to Gerrard Romero, FC Barcelona are keeping a close eye on what’s going on at Manchester City, with Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and young gun Nico O’Reilly all on the Catalan side’s shortlist should a transfer opportunity arise.

Barcelona know fully well about their own La Liga salary cap issues but president Joan Laporta and Deco believe the recent Manchester City shake-up could be the perfect chance to swoop in and sign a world-class player they would otherwise have no hope of acquiring.
Haaland remains the dream for Barcelona’s long term future
It won’t be a surprise to most Barcelona fans to learn Erling Haaland has always been the transfer target of Joan Laporta, and with no true number 9 at the club, it really is the perfect opportunity to secure a generational striker for the club.
The Norwegian’s wages and release clause have always made a move all but impossible but should Manchester City have to offload their star striker due to Premier League punishments, Barcelona will want to be first in line despite any structured wage agreement needed to facilitate the transfer.
Cherki and O’Reilly offer tactical depth and high ceiling
As well as the headline grabbing Erling Haaland, the inclusion of Rayan Cherki and Nico O’Reilly shows Barcelona want to increase their depth as much as possible while also targeting technically gifted players that will fit in with Hansi Flick’s system of play.
Cherki’s versatility in attack means he would add a huge amount of quality and competition in midfield while English call-up Nico O’Reilly would provide an exciting prospect who could play as the perfect fullback or anywhere in the middle of the park.
Reality check: Opportunity versus Barcelona’s financial constraints
While many Barca fans will salivate at the prospect of a Manchester City transfer coup, a touch of reality is needed.
While following what’s going on in Manchester is one thing, actually making a move requires a whole different set of circumstances and right now Barcelona are still very much on a tightrope regarding their wage bill.
The whole deal hinges on both a verdict in the Manchester City court case as well as a relaxation of the 1:1 La Liga spending rule by the league but by keeping these players on their shortlist Barcelona can be ready to pounce should a scenario arise.
