For the first time in 575 days, FC Barcelona have left a UEFA Champions League pitch with a clean sheet. A 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday ended an unwanted record: a brutal streak of 18 consecutive Champions League matches conceding at least one goal.

The 18-game goalless streak was a record for any Spanish team in the history of European football. Before Tuesday night’s clash at Spotify Camp Nou, their last clean sheet came in a 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on April 9, 2025, in the first-leg of the 2024/25 quarter-finals.

Hansi Flick’s press suffered 575 days of pain

Since then, Hansi Flick’s high-pressing system has led the team to walk a tight-rope throughout the next 19 months. The team conceded in the second-leg against Dortmund, a messy semi-final exit, the entire 2025/26 Champions League campaign and the first three games of this season’s league phase against Feyenoord, Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain.

Any time they won comfortably, they would concede due to a miscalculated offside trap or lack of concentration in the dying moments.

Joan Garcia’s huge block seals the clean sheet

A huge block from Joan García helped Barcelona overcome the psychological barrier they had set up. During the first-half, Barcelona were leading 1-0 but the curse almost reached 19 games in the 31st minute. Johan Manzambi found himself in space inside the box and unleashed a powerful shot.

Garcíia made a huge block to prevent him scoring and keep it to zero. He then saved again as Rodri headed the ball away. The clean sheet comes after an incredible 16 games unbeaten run against English teams at home in the UEFA competitions. This lifts a heavy 575 day burden off the shoulders of Joan Garcia and the defence.
