Barcelona’s expected XI vs Atletico Madrid: Flick goes all-in for crucial second leg clash

With 2-0 down in the first leg, there’s no room for rotation now. No experimenting, no half-measures.

Barcelona head into tomorrow’s clash against Atletico Madrid, needing their best players on the pitch from the first minute, and everything points toward Hansi Flick going with a full-strength, attack-heavy lineup.

This is Barcelona going all-in.

The number one stays

There is nothing much to debate here. Joan García is certain to get the start as Barcelona's number one. There have been some criticisms of his performance in the first leg by some notable figures like Oliver Kahn, but he will look to be clutch tonight with a clean sheet.

No surprises at the back, but one big absence

The defensive line is pretty obvious, especially after Pau Cubarsí’s unavailability. This opens up the door for the centre-back pairing of Eric García and Gerard Martín. Koundé will be the obvious choice at right-back, and Cancelo will keep his place at the left-back position. It is a pretty standard backline for Barcelona, minus Cubarsí.

The midfield that decides everything

The biggest boost for Barcelona is the return of Frenkie de Jong. In the absence of the rising 193 cm pivot, Frenkie de Jong alongside Pedri is the pairing that gives Barcelona control and positional intelligence – or at least, the best chance of it.

Pedri will be crucial for the tie as he will be the one trying to unlock Atlético’s low block with his passing and switches of play. De Jong’s role will be what he does best; carrying the ball, breaking lines, and acting as the link between the defence and attack.

Ahead of them, Fermín Lopez is expected to play as the number 10, while Dani Olmo is expected to make an impact coming off the bench. It could even be the reverse but we expect Fermín Lopez to get the nod ahead of Olmo.

All eyes on the front three

This is where the game will be won or lost.

Lamine Yamal definitely starts on the right.Yamal was very vocal about his thoughts ahead of the match, and Culés would expect him to provide the magic Barcelona need to win. At 18 years old, Yamal has been Barcelona’s most reliable attacker this season, and his unpredictability and finesse will be a key factor against Atlético.

On the left, Marcus Rashford keeps his place despite the noise around his first-leg performance. Barcelona are sure to miss their 93% win-rate superstar, but Rashford’s qualities, especially his pace, is still one of the few things that can stretch Atlético’s defensive structure.

And then there’s Robert Lewandowski. After a match-winning performance against Espanyol, the surprise hero Ferran Torres would expect to start and rightfully so. But the quality of Robert Lewandowski is not to be slept on. Lewandowski is the third-highest Champions League goalscorer of all time, and is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and the GOAT Lionel Messi. Barcelona needs Lewandowski to be at his best against Atlético. No matter who starts the match, both Ferran Torres and Lewandowski are sure to have minutes.

Flick is going with experience here, trusting Lewandowski to finish whatever chances come his way.

  • Flick is clearly prioritizing:

    • Control through De Jong and Pedri

    • Creativity and runs in-behind through Fermín

    • Width and magic through Rashford and Yamal

    • Experience through Lewandowski

There’s a clear idea: take the game to Atlético instead of reacting to them.

Final thought

When you’re chasing a comeback away from home, you don’t get many second chances.
This lineup reflects that.
Barcelona isn’t holding anything back — and if this XI clicks early, the tie might just come alive again.
