It was supposed to be the season of his full return. After glimpses of his best form during pre-season, many expected Gavi to play a key role in FC Barcelona's midfield for the 2025/26 campaign. However, his comeback has been derailed by a knee injury that has worsened upon the initial diagnosis.
The young La Masia graduate initially felt discomfort in his knee before the international break, and after further assessment, it became clear that the damage was more severe than first thought. In the past week, Gavi underwent arthroscopic surgery in Barcelona, where surgeons discovered extensive joint damage, beyond what was originally anticipated.
What was initially expected to be a four-to-five week recovery has quickly escalated into a much longer absence. According to Mundo Deportivo, the surgery, which included suturing the meniscus to preserve its function and ensure Gavi can return without long-term issues, has extended his layoff significantly.
The midfielder now faces a period of at least four to five months on the sidelines. This means Gavi won't be expected to return to action before March 2026, potentially missing crucial matches as the season intensifies, both domestically and in Europe.
Hansi Flick see the positives in the bad news
Speaking ahead of the Real Oviedo clash, Barcelona manager, Hansi Flick, confirmed the news regarding the injury lay off, and surprisingly claimed this is the best thing for him.
"“When you receive news like this, you think, 'It's bad news,' but for him personally, it's good news. Now we know what to do. He's 21 years old and has a very long career ahead of him. We have to think about this, to get him 100 percent fit and stay strong.”"Hansi Flick
Manager Hansi Flick would have undoubtedly preferred to have Gavi available for the crucial fixtures ahead. However, he’s put on a brave face in light of the setback, perhaps reflecting on the situation after personally visiting the young midfielder. Flick wasn’t alone, Ronald Araújo, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal also stopped by in the past 24 hours to show their support.
For now, Gavi remains sidelined, forced to watch from a distance while longing to return to the pitch and do what he loves most. The setback has been a tough pill to swallow for both the player and Barcelona fans, but the outpouring of support from teammates and supporters has offered Gavi a much-needed boost as he begins the long road to recovery.
