The transfer window is closing and with only a handful of days remaining it seems like FC Barcelona could be preparing a last minute bid for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. Manager Hansi Flick is reportedly the biggest admirere of the 23 year old French defender, and it's easy to see why.
Flick has long admired Lukeba’s unique blend of left-footedness, speed and physique that would enable Barcelona to play a high defensive line without fear.
What's more, Lukeba can play across multiple defensive positions (centre-back and left-back) which is a key trait the German desires in his defence.
The Balde domino effect
However impressive the defensive profile is, executing the signing at the club seems to be another obstacle altogether. It is no secret that RB Leipzig will not be selling Luke for a bargain price and they know they hold almost all the power, with him being under contract until 2029 and having an enormous 90 million euro release clause.
In order for there to be any hope of Barcelona tableing an offer during the next few days of the window, space must be made for new arrivals. According to reports, if an agreement between the two clubs is to be struck, it would require the selling of Alejandro Balde, the Catalan club’s left-back.
Therefore, without a substantial outgoing, Barcelona have not much hope of securing the signing of the RB Leipzig defender and if Flick is to get his man, the club must first engineer some exits.
