FC Barcelona is set to return to the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys (Montjuic) for part of the 2027/2028 season, according to Cadena SER. The club have already begun discussions with Barcelona City Council about renting the Olympic stadium as a venue for their home matches.

This is an inevitable decision in order to complete the most complex, final stage of the Spotify Camp Nou renovation. With Barcelona set to return to 1:1 rule in La Liga, completion of the Spotify Camp Nou is the next step.

The Engineering Crisis: Why the Stadium Must Be Empty

The 1.45 billion Euro Espai Barca construction project has a crucial milestone. The club anticipates completing all three seating tiers in April 2027. However, the stadium roof is proving to be an engineering nightmare to install.

  • Structural Weight: The roof comprises of extremely large steel structures that extend across the full perimeter of the stadium.
  • Safety Exclusion Zones: For security reasons, workers cannot allow tens of thousands of fans in to the stadium when the heavy machinery and cable networks are suspended overhead.
  • Timeline of Installation: Current estimates indicate that the roof will take between four and seven months to install, which will cover the majority of the start of the 2027/2028 football season.

Montjuic vs Johan Cruyff: Capacity Issues

A move to the Johan Cruyff stadium for smaller domestic fixtures was discussed by President Joan Laporta. However, with capacity of only 6,000 (which could be raised to 18,000 with temporary seating), the club stood to lose considerable match day revenue during a time when funds are crucial.

  • Revenue Preservation: Montjuc holds more than 50,000 spectators and can maintain a stable income stream of ticket and VIP sales.
  • Infrastructure readiness: The club spent close to 20 million euros upgrading the Montjuc facilities during their first stay (2023-2025), so it is the most viable "Plan B."

Consultation with City Hall

Negotiations for the 2027 move are already underway with Barcelona City Council. It is not just the rent agreement, but also for major events like international concerts and other festivals.

The Final Stage

When all is complete, Barcelona will be able to return to a finished with roof installed Spotify Camp Nou with a capacity of 105,000. This will end their period of "stadium nomadism." Moving out for the 2027/2028 season will allow them to remain on track with the project and to prepare the stadium for the 2029 Champions League final, a specific target of the current board.

The transfer to Montjuic will be an unpopular one with fans, mainly due to its location and atmosphere. But for the board it is a necessary sacrifice to provide a top of the line, fully covered stadium by 2028.
