Barcelona have agreed to let Ronald Araújo leave the club on loan for the season, with the Uruguayan set to join Premier League side Liverpool. Araújo is expected to undergo a medical before completing his move to Anfield shortly.
The deal comes as Liverpool look to address a sudden shortage of defensive options ahead of the new season, but it represents something of a surprise for the La Liga champions given that centre-back is one area where Barcelona are already short on depth.
With Pau Cubarsí, Eric García and Andreas Christensen currently the more experienced options in the position, the departures of Araújo and potentially others could leave Barcelona relying heavily on younger players such as Gerard Martín and Álvaro Cortés for cover.

A Liverpool and Araujo win
For Liverpool and Araújo, the deal makes plenty of sense. With Jérémy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez sidelined through injury, Andoni Iraola has been left short of senior centre-backs, while Conor Bradley is also unavailable as a right-back option.
For Araújo, the move offers a chance to secure regular first-team football. Heis expected to become a starter in the short term, providing valuable minutes for a Liverpool side looking to make a strong start in their pursuit of the Premier League title. Whether he lines up at right-back or alongside Virgil van Dijk remains to be seen.
The 27-year-old is a natural centre-back but can also operate at right-back, giving Liverpool some much-needed flexibility. He made 38 appearances for Barcelona last season and has racked up 213 senior appearances for the Catalan giants since breaking into the first team.
It could prove to be a win-win move, with Liverpool getting an experienced defender when they need one most, while Araújo gets the opportunity to play a key role at Anfield.
