The backbone of the Spanish National Team still remains in Catalonia as 2026 World Cup draws closer. A recent report by Mundo Deportivo has revealed all the Barcelona players battling for a flight ticket and the clear pecking order in Luis de la Fuente's plan.
While six players are designated "Untouchable", the path to World Cup for some well-known names looks "practically impossible".
The elite six: The heart of La Roja.
It's understood that six Barcelona players are confirmed to be starters or definitely part of the team:
Lamine Yamal and Pedri: The architects of creative play. Yamal's 1v1 threat coupled with Pedri's ball-holding ability make them the first on the team sheet.
Pau Cubarsi: The rise of the Catalan defender who has surpassed more experienced names due to his line-breaking abilities from the center back role.
Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo: This trio gives de la Fuente the versatile, goal-threatening midfielders/wingers he craves.
The Gavi question and "Options" group
The biggest name on the "Options" list is Gavi. Under normal circumstances, he is an undisputed starter, however, he is on the list based solely on his recovery and physical shape.
Gavi: He is still rediscovering his high-intensity, mobility and dynamism after the injury. But given his reputation in both the Spanish and Barcelona dressing room, he is expected the make the list for the World Cup.
Defensive depths: Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin are on the list although the latter remains a long shot.
Goalkeeping alternative: Joan Garcia has been constantly linked as the starter for the Spanish National team. Unai Simon and David Raya are also in contention for the starter position. It is only time will tell, who gets the nod from De la Fuente.
The Shock Exclusions: The reason why Balde and Casad are out.
The "Practically Impossible" section of the report is by far the most striking part. Although talented, three players are currently out of the World Cup race:
Alejandro Balde: From being considered the next Jordi Alba, it's unclear why his performance or current physical state makes him unsuitable for the National Team.
Marc Casado: Even if he has been one of Barcelona's most reliable midfielders this season, there is no room for the young player given the competition in the Spanish midfield led by Rodri.
Marc Bernal: Although he is one of the best emerging talents at the moment, his performance in the 2026 World Cup is "too early" for him.
The tactical effect on Barcelona
Having six players as "Untouchable" on the team ensures Barcelona's constant presence in the national team. This will help Hansi Flick and Barcelona as their key players will have their chances to prove themselves in the biggest stage.
However, Balde has been given a clear wake-up call and needs to use the rest of the season to prove to de la Fuente that he can earn a place on the plane.
