Xavi Esparat will head straight back to first-team training after a busy summer that ended with European Under-19 Championship glory yesterday. The right-back is set for a big season at the club, likely serving as the understudy to Jules Koundé and João Cancelo.

Despite being entitled to a few days off, Esparat will report to the Ciutat Esportiva on Monday to join his teammates for the start of pre-season under Hansi Flick.

Esparat was joined in Spain’s triumphant U-19 squad by fellow La Masia graduates Andrés Cuenca and Hugo López. Together, they helped Spain dominate the tournament, winning all five matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding none, yes, none. After overcoming an impressive Croatia side in the semi-finals, Spain defeated Germany in the final, having already beaten them in the group stage.

Spain’s U-19s boast a remarkable record at the European Championship, lifting the trophy 13 times in the last 15 editions. The competition has long served as a breeding ground for future stars, including Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and many others.

The Vilassar de Mar native is equally comfortable in midfield and at full-back, a versatility that has drawn comparisons with Philipp Lahm. Having come through La Masia as a central midfielder, Xavi gradually adapted to a deeper role during his development. Last season he featured in both positions, though he was used primarily as a full-back.

The star has achieved his goal of getting in shape for the tournament, shining, and taking advantage of the momentum to join the preseason.

Barcelona right-back situation

Barcelona's first-choice right-back, Jules Koundé, is set to remain at the World Cup until its conclusion, meaning he may not return to action until the start of the new season. Missing a full pre-season could affect his sharpness, while João Cancelo is also likely to report back late after exiting the tournament only a week ago, potentially opening the door for Xavi to deputise.

The youngster's development could also give Barcelona the confidence to cash in on Koundé, with Bayern Munich and several other clubs reportedly interested in the French defender. Such a move could generate a fee in the region of £40–50 million.

Given his intentions to come back to first-team training so early after bcoming under-19 champion, we may see more of Xavi Espart this year.
