Since his signing in 2019, Frenkie de Jong has been one of the most consistent mainstays of Barcelona's midfield. Having gone on to play more than 200 games for the club, the Dutch star has been one of the best midfield prospects for FC Barcelona. Recorded 38 goal contributions while ensuring brilliant work in the club's midfield, the 27-year-old star has established himself as one of the core players in Barca.
FC Barcelona faces uncertainties regarding €75M ace midfielder's future
Frenkie de Jong's importance is much evident from the fact that his highly injury-inflicted 2023/24 campaign indeed proved to be one of the most underwhelming ones for FC Barcelona. Considering the same, even though de Jong hasn't been restored to his full fitness, the Catalan club has been looking to secure him for further years, renewing him past his current contract, which runs down in 2026.
However, recent reports regarding Barca's renewal plans for de Jong don't sound positive, with doubts still prevailing in the Blaugrana club's camp about the player's future. As per reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Dutch star was significantly bothered by his contract being leaked, after which he had to face serious criticism during his injury unavailability.
Moreover, what has been concerning is that even though Barca had sent him an offer proposal, much lucrative by their standards, de Jong's response is still awaited for the last year. Understandably, reports suggest that FC Barcelona's entourage is much aware that renewing the ace midfielder would be much harder than Pedri, Gavi, and Araujo's renewal, whose contracts expire in 2026 as well.
At Barca, they have pretty clear views on the ongoing de Jong's contract renewal saga. While definitely the Blaugrana club believes him an important player, with Flick trusting the star player for his technical and physical abilities, they would not be afraid to exclude him from their future plans in adverse situations. As per Mundo Deportivo reports, if Frenkie de Jong does not renew before the end of the season, he will be placed on the transfer market next summer.
From FC Barcelona's perspective, preparing for the worst conditions doesn't sound that concerning. Given that the club already holds brilliant options like Pedri, Gavi, Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, and even Eric Garcia for the pivot role, they can afford to substitute and later sell de Jong if he doesn't want to renew more. While it would definitely mean losing a star player, a bold decision from the club in this scenario could yield financial betterment as well.
Currently, FC Barcelona faces significant uncertainties over de Jong's future, whose response to the contract renewal is yet to arrive. Although, even now, the Blaugrana club is fond of the player, being more than ready to have him on their side, recent reports suggest they wouldn't hesitate to take bold decisions if the situation demands.
