FC Barcelona has made a shocking announcement. The club has formally submitted a complaint to UEFA regarding the refereeing performance across both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid.

In the statement released today, Barcelona has voiced their strong opinions and mentioned that several key decisions did not comply with the “Laws of the Game”.

FC Barcelona has also shown their dissatisfaction with the quality of refereeing, and implementation of VAR system. The club believes the accumulation of these errors had a direct impact on the course of the matches and ultimately on the final outcome of the tie against Atletico. They also mention the decisions caused “significant sporting and financial harm to Barcelona”.

On account of this, Barcelona have offered to work with UEFA to help improve the refereeing system, calling for a “more rigorous, fair and transparent” application of the rules going forward.

This comes just days after the painful elimination in the hands of Atletico Madrid, where several key decisions went against Barcelona. Moreover every 50/50 decision went against Barcelona in both the legs, and many fans and pundits have called out the referees, on this foul play.

While complaints like this rarely lead to a replay or overturned result, it shows the club is not staying silent. They’re putting it on record. Whether it changes anything in the future is another question, but at least the club is standing up and saying what a lot of us have been thinking since the final whistle.
