Frenkie de Jong’s Barcelona spell could be cut short earlier than many expect, according to a renowned Dutch sports journalist anyway. Talking on the De Telegraaf podcast Kick-off, Valentijn Driessen believes the 29-year-old central midfielder is in his final campaign at the Camp Nou. Though de Jong has a deal in place until the middle of 2029, his stint with the Catalan side has certainly seen better days.

With a number of injuries impacting his time at the club he may struggle for consistency again this season.

"He has been injured a lot, they have tried to sell him before, and now they are bringing in top talent," Driessen noted. "I don't think they will try to force him out while he is injured, but I do think he is playing his last season at the club."

Driessen stated that the club won’t try and move de Jong along whilst he’s out injured, however he clearly sees an exit sooner rather than later.

With Barcelona shaping up their midfield to be quite packed, the midfielder will find it hard to make the starting eleven constantly. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is clearly looking to impose himself and rebuild the squad and that may ultimately push Frenkie out of the door if he isn’t in the starting XI on a consistent basis.

Having said he wants to finish his career at Barcelona, de Jong will struggle to do so if he isn’t a definite starter.
