Julian Alvarez has blown the summer transfer window wide open. The Argentine forward has made no attempt to hide his desire to leave, releasing an incendiary interview with ESPN confirming that he will be departing Atletico Madrid this summer.

"I do not want to cover me up, nor do I want to avoid clarity. I spoke to Atletico people and I believe that the best for all is my departure. I want a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream."

And his dream is FC Barcelona. The Catalans reportedly saw a 100 million offer recently batted away from the Madrid based club. Personal terms with the player are now completed, with only terms between the two clubs to be agreed. The forward has now put his neck on the line in public, so it's up to Joan Laporta to make the rescue happen for Alvarez.

Atletico Madrid slap Barcelona with 500 million ultimatum

The Rojiblancos have responded aggressively to the player’s public request and released a statement through Spanish outlet Diario AS, declaring that it will be impossible for Barcelona to ever buy the prolific forward.

“There is no amount of money in the world with which Barça can buy Julian lvarez,” an Atletico official said clearly. “They either pay the release clause for 500 million euros, or nothing happens.”

FIFA complaints and behaving like a child

Atletico are reportedly not just going to leave the ball there but are planning to lodge an official complaint to FIFA, accusing the club of illegal tapping up the talented player who is under contract at The Wanda Metropolitano for many years to come.

Atletico told Diario AS: “It is well known it is a cheating club, but this time they are dealing with a club that is not going to joke around with it.”

Can Arsenal or PSG hijack the deal?

If Barcelona, due to financial or relationship constraints are unable to meet Atletico’s sky high demands for Alvarez, it is unlikely that the 26-year-old will have to wait too long for more elite destinations to put their hats into the ring.

  • Arsenal: Mikel Arteta is desperate to land a world-class, and adaptable focal point to lead his attack and Arsenal will not fear bidding high to land his signature.
  • PSG: The French behemoths have the financial capacity to easily smash Atletico’s demands and would no doubt be willing to give Alvarez exactly the platform to become one of the best players in the world.

Time to go all in

Barcelona cannot let Avarez get away. Alvarez has made his efforts to secure a move to the Camp Nou and have left Barcelona in a position where they either have to match the exorbitant release clause or lose out on the signature of the attacking sensation to either Arsenal or PSG.
