Barcelona travelled to Athletic Club looking to extend their La Liga lead to four points, and while a 1–0 victory achieved that objective, the performance itself was a lot to be left desired.
It took a moment of magic from Lamine Yamal, a glimpse of his world-class talent, as he received the ball in the box, cut inside his marker and produced a superb finish off the post. The goal lit up San Mamés in Barcelona’s favour and once again shifted the La Liga title race, giving Los Culés the advantage.
The first 45 minutes were disappointing in terms of quality from both sides, with neither team able to gain control in midfield or consistently push into their opponent’s half. The attacking movement focused on the wide areas which failed to materialise any golden opportunities in front of goal.
The introduction of Pedri at half-time proved to be the turning point, with the Barcelona midfielder immediately improving the team’s ability to retain possession as he looked more threatening in attack. His decisive pass on the hour mark found Yamal in space, perfectly weighted and directed to allow the youngster to produce his moment of magic.
In the end, that proved to be the difference in a match that was never likely to be a vintage performance. Given the absences and changes to the lineup, expecting a polished display was never particularly realistic in an different environment especially after the relationship between the teams soured in the Nico Williams transfer saga in the summer.
While the victory ultimately came down to Yamal, who rightly deserves the headlines, credit must also go to Barcelona’s defensive high line, which delivered a performance reminiscent of last season in offside management. And when that line was breached, Joan García was there to stand firm with an important save in the first half.
It was an important clean sheet that should provide a significant boost in confidence ahead of a crucial run of fixtures in March that could go a long way in defining their season. Next up, Champions League first leg against Newcastle, then Sevilla at home in the quest for La Liga dominance against Real Madrid.
3 points and onto the next.
