FC Barcelona has secured the services of one of its brightest La Masía graduates for the long term, as midfielder Marc Bernal has signed a contract extension with the club until 2029. The deal was finalized on Monday morning at the Club Offices, with president Joan Laporta, first vice president Rafael Yuste, and sporting director Deco all in attendance.
The 18-year-old, who was officially registered as a first-team player for the 2025–26 season, now carries a massive release clause of €500 million. This agreement not only reflects Barcelona’s faith in Bernal’s potential but also ensures his development continues at the highest level under Hansi Flick.
Bernal emerged as a standout in Flick’s early lineups last season at just 17, but his rise was abruptly halted in August 2024 when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear along with additional meniscus damage. The injury sidelined him for over a year and was a huge blow at such a pivotal stage in his career.
Despite the setback, Barcelona moved quickly to protect their young talent. By September 2024, the club had already agreed in principle to extend his deal until 2029 once he turned 18. That commitment has now been officially sealed, with a significant salary adjustment included in the new contract.
Earlier this month, Bernal marked his long-awaited return to action by providing an assist in Barça’s 6–0 win over Valencia; his first appearance after 383 days out. While his playing time is being carefully managed, the midfielder from Berga is expected to become an increasingly important figure as the season develops.
With this contract extension, Barcelona has once again underlined its strategy of securing homegrown talent for the future. Bernal is now positioned to grow into a key player at the heart of the Blaugrana midfield, with the club showing full belief in his ability to overcome adversity and thrive at the highest level.
