One player stood out for Barcelona for the right reasons, and the one for the wrong reasons

Barcelona face an uphill battle to keep their Champions League dream alive after a 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou this evening.

Goals from transfer target Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth were compounded by Pau Cubarsí’s red card, which VAR correctly ruled as denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Despite the loss, Barcelona created opportunities, including a strong penalty appeal following a goal-kick mix-up. They head into the return leg with a sense of belief and optimism, knowing that a determined performance could still turn the tie in their favor.

Here are the player rating from the defeat:

Joan Garcia - 6.5

He had little to do for most of the game aside from picking the ball out of the net twice. He couldn’t be blamed for the first goal, but perhaps could have been better positioned for the second.

Jules Kounde - 6.0

Offered little in the attacking third and allowed Matteo Ruggeri to cross in for the second goal, he should have done more to prevent it.

Pau Cubarsí - 5.0

Was caught out by Giovanni Simeone’s run and paid the price with a red card. It wasn’t a particularly forceful challenge, more of a coming together, but ultimately a clumsy foul that cost Barcelona the game.

Gerard Martín - 6.5

Failed to track Alexander Sørloth’s run for the second goal, but was otherwise largely untroubled. Took on greater responsibility after the red card and looked more assertive.

Joao Cancelo - 7.0

Looked a threat down the left, regularly overlapping the winger. He tested the goalkeeper with efforts in both halves, but neither shot was enough to trouble an impressive Juan Musso.

Eric Garcia - 6.5

Never truly stood out in either midfield or defence, with his distribution falling below the required standard.

Pedri - 6.5

Was taken off at half-time for unknown reasons, hopefully not due to injury. His most notable contribution was the pass that led to the disallowed goal, but he was otherwise tightly marked and never allowed to dictate the game.

Lamine Yamal - 8.0

Proved he was the standout player in Blaugrana colours, showcasing his superior quality in direct duels with Ruggeri. His highlight moments came from two dazzling runs, gliding past four or five defenders with ease, evoking shades of Lionel Messi at his peak.

He never let his intensity drop throughout the match. However, you’d still like to see the youngster take on more shots to properly test Musso.

Dani Olmo - 7.0

Ran tirelessly throughout the game, showing determination to make an impact. Like much of the team, he lacked the precision in through balls and finishing needed to truly influence the outcome.

Marcus Rashford - 7.5

Was a real bright spark and, with sharper finishing, could have had a first-half hat-trick. Looked most dangerous operating from the left, though he also had a great opportunity as centre forward when played through by Yamal.

Robert Lewandowski - 6.5

Had a shot that was deflected but struggled to stretch the defence, often appearing too static in the first half. He was taken off at half-time, largely due to the red card rather than his individual performance.

Subs:

Gavi - 6.5

Showed energy in retaining possession, but with Atlético sitting deep, he never produced the decisive pass to break the defence. Picked up a booking for his first foul, arguably harsh, which appeared to curb his intensity in pressing for the remainder of the game.

Fermin Lopez - 6.5

Showed energy down the left but was largely kept in check by the defence. Linked up effectively with Cancelo, creating some promising exchanges.
