A late penalty save Barcelona and likely to give them the advantage in the second leg.

Barcelona returned to where their Champions League journey began, but the match could hardly have been more different from the 2–1 victory back in September.

Newcastle’s physicality and relentless pressing stifled Barcelona’s attacking threat. They earned their goal and, on the balance of play, could easily have had more before Lamine Yamal stepped up to the penalty spot.

His last-minute goal ultimately swung the tie in Barcelona’s favour heading into the return leg.

The centre-back pairing were the standout performers, while Pedri’s composure and quality helped the Catalans navigate several tricky situations. Here is how the rest of the team performed:

Player Ratings

Joan Garcia - 7.0

Performed well to stifle Barcelona’s half-chances in the opening period, though he looked vulnerable dealing with crosses. He can hardly be blamed for the goal; the power of Barnes’ strike left him with no time to adjust his positioning.

Ronald Araujo - 6.5

Delivered a solid performance for the majority of the match, largely neutralizing the threat posed by Harvey Barnes. However, he must shoulder the blame for the conceded goal; a critical lack of urgency, perhaps hinting at a lack of fitness , left him unable to recover his position, granting Barnes the space to finish.

Pau Cubarsí - 7.5

Produced a vital block to deny Sandro Tonali and appeared largely untroubled by William Osula throughout. He led the backline with authority, marshaling the offside trap and initiating play with composed distribution; he bears no responsibility for the goal conceded.

Gerard Martín - 7.0

Delivered an admirable performance, further cementing his growing influence at the heart of Barcelona's defense. While he lacked any standout highlight-reel contributions, he was fundamentally sound, largely restricting Newcastle to half-chances down the right flank.

Joao Cancelo - 6.5

The Portuguese fullback started at left-back and provided valuable attacking width throughout the night. However, his defensive contribution was marred by the opening goal; in my view, he was far too passive in allowing the cross to come in, failing to close down the space with sufficient urgency.

Marc Bernal - 6.0

Struggled to keep up play and was largely overran in the midfield. When in possession seemed comfortable though.

Pedri - 7.0

Showed flashes of elite quality when wriggling out of tight spaces, yet failed to provide the final-third spark needed to make Barcelona truly tick. Could excel in a game where the team disappointed.

Lamine Yamal - 7.0

Showed flashes of brilliance with his first touch and a relentless desire to drive at defenders. When faced with a high-pressure penalty, the very last kick of the game, he remained remarkably composed, clinical from the spot to level the tie.

Fermín Lopez - 6.0

Delivered a poor performance in the final third, failing to influence the attacking flow or create meaningful openings. He was consistently bullied off the ball, struggling to hold his own in physical duels.

Raphinha - 6.5

Showed flashes of quality, particularly after moving central, but undermined his performance with inconsistent passing. While he allowed Harvey Barnes too much room for the goal, it’s a difficult error to judge fairly given he shouldn’t have been there in first place.

Robert Lewandowski - 6.5

Spurned Barcelona's best chance when he fired wide from a teasing Raphinha cross. Throughout the match, he struggled to impose himself against a physical Premier League center-back pairing that frequently bullied him off the ball.

Substitutes

Dani Olmo - 7.0

Won the penalty which was crucial in the result.

Marcus Rashford - 6.5

Enjoyed some good runs at the full-back but the final product lacked.
