In yesterday's Barcelona transfer news roundup, we revealed that Barcelona were keen to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who is currently on loan at Getafe. However, the player's preference has been revealed.
Barcelona transfer news: Mason Greenwood would choose Manchester United over Barca
According to English outlet The Sun, Mason Greenwood would prefer to play for Manchester United, if he is given the option to return and fight for his place at the club. Manchester United are still deciding on their best course of action, after the England international was sent out on loan due to his legal battle.
A source cited in The Sun report states: “Mason respected the decision Manchester United made to send him to Spain, but he always wanted to return to the team after the police investigation involving him came to an end. He believes he has a debt to repay the fans and the manager and would love a second chance."
Does this mean that Barcelona should give up? No, of course not. The Catalan side should absolutely pursue their transfer target until the very end, unless Manchester United outrightly states that he is not for sale.
When Greenwood first bursted onto the scene, he looked like one of the most promising youngsters in the world. He would consistently get goal and assist returns but more importantly, he played with high energy and purpose.
Too often, young wingers lack footballing intelligence but not Greenwood. He knows the best time to cut inside or release the ball, which when combined with his electrifying pace and end-product, makes him the real deal.
Taking a step back from football in the last year was bound to have an impact on his ability and confidence. However, getting invaluable experience in the Spanish top-flight will make him ready for the Barcelona move, should it happen.
