The wait is finally over. The new La Liga season is here, marking the start of a new era for Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick. With a new squad, fresh tactical ideas, and a host of players eager to impress, the focus now turns to who will be selected for the crucial first match.
Ahead of the trip to face Real Mallorca, speculation is rife about Flick's preferred starting XI. This is our predicted lineup for a clash that will set the tone for the entire season.
Joan Garcia
While the registration of goalkeeper Joan García is not yet finalized, there have been several positive developments this week. With the clock ticking toward the season opener, reports from Spain suggest that the club is confident the new signing from Espanyol will be able to make his debut. This is a crucial moment, as García has been designated as the new number one goalkeeper.
Jules Kounde
It's a direct battle between Jules Koundé and Eric García for the starting position, a competition that was likely decided in the pre-season friendly against Como. In that match, which many believe showcased the intended starting XI, García was substituted at halftime. His replacement, Koundé, delivered a far more balanced performance, offering not only defensive solidity but also a significant threat going forward, which may have given him the edge for the starting spot.
Ronald Araujo
The Uruguayan is likely to be the captain going into the season, so his place in the first team when fit is a guarantee. His position is even more guaranteed following the departure of Inigo Martinez.
Pau Cubarsi
For me, he’s the undisputed first choice in this position. He defends with calmness and composure, and while he prefers operating on the right, the La Masia graduate is more than capable of slotting in on the left side of central defence to accommodate his partner.
Alejandro Balde
His blistering pace and attacking intent from the left-back position are vital to Barcelona's system, providing the width and dynamism needed to stretch opposition defenses.
Frenkie de Jong
As the midfield anchor, Frenkie de Jong’s role is to dictate the tempo and ensure a smooth transition from defense to attack. His exceptional passing range and ability to carry the ball forward under pressure make him the team's engine room
Pedri
The midfield maestro is expected to resume his role as the team's primary creative hub. Pedri's vision, close control, and ability to unlock a defense with a single pass are what make him a special talent. He will be tasked with finding space between the lines and linking up with the forwards to create goalscoring opportunities.
Fermin Lopez
With Dani Olmo sidelined for the Joan Gamper Trophy due to physical issues, Fermín López seized his opportunity. A man-of-the-match performance capped by two goals was more than enough to impress, and earn his position in the first game.
Lamine Yamal
Write his name first on the first team sheet when fit and in-form. The 18-year-old will be the La Liga star this season with the number 10 on his back.
Raphinha
On the opposite flank, Raphinha provides a different kind of attacking threat. His powerful left foot and tireless work rate make him a valuable asset. He is expected to start on the left wing, providing accurate crosses and cutting inside to unleash powerful shots, complementing the directness of Lamine Yamal on the right.
Ferran Torres
With Robert Lewandowski sidelined with a hamstring injury, Ferran Torres has a golden opportunity to lead the line. His intelligent movement, versatility, and clinical finishing make him a solid choice for the number nine role. Having shown good form in pre-season, he will be tasked with being the main goal threat for the team, and is favoured over Marcus Rashford for me basis on basis his pre-season form and formality to the system.
Football is back and I can't wait.
