For football purists, the prospect of Rodri wearing a Real Madrid shirt this summer feels wrong on several levels.

There is the former Atletico Madrid midfielder crossing the city divide, the scars left by years of Champions League battles, and the fact that Rodri beat Real Madrid’s golden boy, Vinicius Jr., to the Ballon d’Or, a result that prompted outrage inside the club.

That image just doesn't feel right, and I’m sure some Real Madrid players might feel the same way.

Los Blancos are planning to sign a new midfielder this summer, and one of the players they’ve shortlisted is Rodri Hernandez. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner has flirted away from Manchester City, where he is only contracted until June 2027.

The prospect of an impending significant points deduction as a result of the Premier League charges has fuelled growing speculation in recent weeks that several high-profile players could leave the Premier League side.

The move

Rodri’s apparent preference for Real Madrid, perhaps shaped by his ties to the capital and a long-standing affinity for the club, underlines a deeper issue for Barcelona.

When Spain’s top players begin to consider a return to La Liga, Real Madrid is almost always the first club mentioned. That has become the default. Madrid are now viewed as the side with the money, the prestige, the clearest project and, above all, certainty.

However, Barcelona should be making a decisive statement by prioritising the defensive midfielder ahead of their rivals.

Since the departure of Sergio Busquets, Barcelona have been searching for a true anchor in midfield. Stop-gap solutions, emerging talents and tactical tweaks have all been tried, yet none have come close to replicating Busquets’ unique influence on the team.

Rodri is arguably the closest thing in modern football to a successor in that mould. He shields the defence, controls the tempo and elevates the players around him. A four-time Premier League winner, he would represent a clear upgrade on Marc Casadó, Marc Bernal and even Frenkie de Jong in the holding role, potentially transforming Barcelona into consistent contenders both domestically and in Europe.

His impact is undeniable: he makes every team better. If he were to join Real Madrid instead, he could become the final piece in their puzzle, turning an already formidable side into a dominant, serial-winning force challenging Barcelona.

So, with this move potentially on the cards, Deco and Joan Laporta should be prepare the cash and go and get him from Manchester.
