The situation surrounding Marc-André ter Stegen at Barcelona appears to be growing increasingly tense. Reports suggest that his insistence on a layoff following back surgery has not gone down well with the club's hierarchy. This perceived inflexibility might lead Barcelona to reconsider their previous plans for his registration, potentially impacting the percentage of his wages covered while he's out injured.

Adding to the speculation, rumors are circulating that Ter Stegen could be stripped of his role in the captaincy team for the upcoming season. This decision, if true, would reportedly stem from a combination of concerns regarding his availability for first-team responsibilities and the club's alleged interest in selling the German international altogether.

A reported list of Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Raphinha are a part of the current captain group with one of those four likely to take the armband in the German’s absence. Araujo led the team out against FC Seoul, and is almost likely to be the captain going forward.

We have already ruled out Lamine Yamal from the captain spots with multiple reasons, so we look at the players that could be in contention to be added to the leadership role.

Inigo Martinez

His extensive experience in La Liga, particularly as a leader at Athletic Bilbao, provides a much-needed veteran presence in a squad that is a blend of youth and international stars. As a central defender and considered a starter, he has a commanding view of the pitch and is naturally positioned to organize and communicate with the entire team. His vocal leadership and no-nonsense approach are qualities that have often been identified as missing from the squad's on-field mentality in recent years.

By entrusting him with the armband, Barcelona would not only be recognizing his professional seniority and dedication but also be injecting a seasoned and assertive voice into the dressing room, which could be invaluable during high-pressure moments and tough stretches of the season.

Gavi

Despite his young age, Gavi should be considered a candidate for the Barcelona captaincy due to his unique blend of passion, unwavering commitment, and deep-rooted connection to the club's identity. From the moment he broke into the first team, his fiery spirit and relentless work rate have made him a natural leader on the pitch, often setting the tempo and inspiring his teammates with his intensity.

His pre-season form, particularly in the friendlies in South Korea, suggested he’s edging back to the level that first propelled him into the spotlight before his injury. On one occasion, he wore the captain’s armband in the second half and led the team to an impressive performance.

Robert Lewandowski

The legendary striker stands as a prime candidate for the Barcelona captaincy due to his unparalleled experience and winning pedigree. As one of the most decorated and professional footballers of his generation, he brings a mentality of elite performance and relentless dedication that is essential for a club of Barcelona's stature. His leadership isn't just vocal; it's demonstrated through his disciplined work ethic, physical conditioning, and unwavering focus on the pitch, which sets a powerful example for the squad's younger players.

Furthermore, having captained the Polish national team for years, Lewandowski is well-acquainted with the responsibilities that come with the armband, making him a natural and respected leader who can guide the team through high-pressure moments and challenge them to maintain the highest standards.
