Barcelona continue to dream of lifting the Champions League, a triumph that would signal the dawn of a new era led by Lamine Yamal and his teammates.

For the Catalans, the competition remains a constant ambition. After a series of recent disappointments, the hunger within the squad is unmistakable, with the players determined to do whatever it takes to reclaim Europe’s most coveted prize.

Standing in their way is a formidable Atlético Madrid side, with their domestic rivals once again intent on derailing Barcelona’s cup ambitions over two legs.

As with any Champions League quarter-final, this clash promises to be a thrilling encounter. Here are three key things to keep in mind before settling in for Wednesday evening’s football entertainment.

Risk of suspensions could determine approach

Barcelona head into the first leg with several players walking a suspension tightrope, as four are just one booking away from missing the return fixture.

Marc Casadó, Fermín López, Gerard Martín and Lamine Yamal are all at risk, with Diego Simeone likely to target Yamal in particular in an attempt to gain an edge ahead of the clash at the Metropolitano.

Atlético, meanwhile, have even greater concerns, with seven players in danger of suspension: Thiago Almada, Pablo Barrios, Robin Le Normand, Clément Lenglet, Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, Matteo Ruggeri and Giuliano Simeone.

If Simeone opts for a more aggressive approach, he risks leaving a significant portion of his starting XI unavailable for the second leg. That looming threat of suspension could play a key role in shaping Atlético’s approach to the game.

False 9 or pure centre forward?

Barcelona face a tactical dilemma between deploying Dani Olmo as a false nine, like in the previous encounter, or starting Robert Lewandowski as a traditional centre-forward.

Olmo offers fluidity, movement, and link-up play, helping overload midfield areas and disrupt defensive structure. While the clinical finish lacks in this selection if the chances are created, it offers better link up with the midfield and allows the winger to come inside.

However, against a disciplined side, Barcelona may need Lewandowski’s presence, physicality, and clinical finishing in the box. His ability to occupy centre-backs and convert limited chances remains invaluable in tight matches.

Different game to the weekend

Atlético will arrive with far greater attacking intent than they showed on Saturday, with the likes of Julián Álvarez and Ademola Lookman expected to return to the starting XI. Their freshness could prove crucial in exploiting Barcelona’s high defensive line.

Barcelona, meanwhile, must raise their level from the weekend and avoid leaving Pedri isolated in midfield, a vulnerability Atlético will look to exploit and potentially dominate.
