Luis Suarez scored his 100th Barcelona goal in the 3-1 victory over Athletic to send Barca to the next round. El Pistolero commented on Lionel Messi and his thoughts on the match after the dust settled.

Just when Barcelona needed him the most, the man wearing number 9 struck. This time, the goal was important to him and to the team. For striker Luis Suarez, his wonderful volley gave him 100 goals as a Barca player. It also gave Barcelona a trip to the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey with a 3-1 win at the Camp Nou. Despite his happiness, there were much more important things on the mind of Luis Suarez. “I’m happy with my goal, but the important thing is it served to help us advance in the Copa,” he said of the big moment.

El Pistolero also mentioned that the work rate of the team was excellent “We’re happy with the work we put in on a general level,” the forward said after opening the scoring with a volley in the first half.  “We had more chances in the first half to go in at half-time in a more comfortable position but it wasn’t to be. We knew they wouldn’t give up and they did equalize and get back in the game until Leo’s free kick.”

Athletic did get an away goal to level the tie at 3-3. After a great free kick from Messi, Suarez felt more confident in the team and in himself. He said that the win will be important down the road. “It was the lift we needed, but we were calm because we knew that we were working well,” Suarez said about achieving the victory.

Suarez also took the time to answer questions about the controversial referee comments from defender Gerard Pique. El Pistolero showed some sympathy for the referees by saying, “They’re always talked about for good or for bad, but what we have to do is to keep working hard to achieve our objectives,” Despite this, he still supported Pique’s comments. Suarez added, “He said what he thinks. Others think the same but don’t say it… we are with him, even though sometimes you have to be careful [what you say].

Overall, the comments from Suarez were really straight forward. He tackled the most important talking points of the week. From Pique to the match and even to the Messi contract saga, he handled it well. About the Messi situation, he said in response to CEO Oscar Grau, “What you have to do with Messi is renew his contract, not have common sense.” He’s right and hopefully Grau realizes that. Hopefully, the dust settles from the drama in Barcelona.
