The right back won’t be called up for the time being despite playing well against Las Palmas on the weekend.

It has been a turbulent season for Aleix Vidal. He might be going through the biggest crisis of anyone at FC Barcelona. However, for one night at the Camp Nou, things appeared to have turned around for the defender. Barca boss Luis Enrique called him up for a league match with Las Palmas this past weekend. He didn’t disappoint anyone that day.

Not only was he called up, but he got to start in his natural position of right back. He played the full 90 minutes and even scored a goal at the end. Vidal’s confidence rose and he turned in a solid performance. Despite that, he’ll have to wait at least one match for another chance to prove himself.

The Spanish defender was left out of Barcelona’s squad to face Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals by manager Luis Enrique. This news comes despite the fact that he played his best match of the season against Las Palmas. He scored the 5th of the 5 goals at the Camp Nou in their last match. Vidal will likely be given another chance, but he needs to stay in a rhythm. Luis Enrique explained why he was left off in a press conference.

“I can only call up 18 players and some have to stay,” Lucho said, “but I keep thinking the same [as I said the other day] about Aleix and the rest. The job of a coach is to take decisions and that’s what I do.” It’s an interesting decision made by the boss. We’ll see who makes the squad. Along with Vidal, Marc Andre ter Stegen and Rafinha will both be left out.

Jeremy Mathieu will also be left off the team so there will be some interesting players in the squad for the Copa Del Rey Quarterfinals. Aleix Vidal in a big cup match would be an intriguing watch for all Barcelona fans. However, it’ll have to wait.

Overall, Vidal is a true right back and he deserves more chances. However, Sergi Roberto is the primary option even if he’s out of position. In addition, Vidal will once again have to wait for a new chance to rise. Maybe his next chance could come against La Liga opponent Eibar next weekend. Hopefully, Lucho gives him another chance so his confidence can continue to grow. After all, scoring a goal as a defender is a great way to gain some confidence.
