9. Gerard Pique

Manchester United snapped him up from Barcelona’s youth academy in 2004. After failing to impress Alex Ferguson, United sold him to Barcelona for €5 million. But United made a grave error in doing so.

Pep Guardiola used Pique to perfection. Pique paired up with Carles Puyol in the heart of the defense. He took up the role of the ball-playing defender whilst Puyol was the limited defender. Guardiola used this pairing to win 14 titles in 4 seasons.

Even after Guardiola’s departure and the subsequent retirement of Carles Puyol, Pique led the Barcelona defense. Last season, he formed a new, formidable partnership with Samuel Umtiti.
