1. José María Giménez

Defence has been a thorn in Barcelona’s side ever since Carles Puyol hung up his boots. The various combinations tried by the various head coaches have been unsuccessful. Last season, Luis Enrique tried the pairing of Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Piqué and it worked.

But the pairing needs a proper backup. Currently, the backup pairing consists of Javier Mascherano and Thomas Vermaelen. Barcelona need a better backup pairing immediately as both of these players are ageing.

The pairing will surely contain Marlon Santos. But it needs a more experienced face to uplift it to the Barcelona level. José María Giménez can be that defender. The Uruguayan has amassed a vast amount of experience with Atlético Madrid.

Next: Gerard Piqué has finally matured as a player

But he is yet to sign a new deal. He could be available to sign next summer and Barcelona should be taking advantage of it. Giménez can be the saviour for Barcelona’s defence.
