5. Matthias Sammer

The Ballon d’Or winner was sporting director at Bayern Munich for 4 years. He is responsible for the signings of players like Thiago, Arturo Vidal, Mario Mandžukić and most notably, Robert Lewandowski.

In his first season working with Jupp Heynckes, he made a contribution to Bayern’s treble win. Sammer worked equally well with Pep Guardiola, and played a role in bringing many titles to the Allianz Arena.

But he has been out of work since 2016, when he resigned on grounds of poor health. But he his condition has improved considerably, and he may consider accepting an offer from a club like Barcelona.

But the German isn’t the best option because he does not have a brilliant track record working with youth players.
