Barcelona need to learn from Bayern’s blunder with Lucas Hernandez

Lucas Hernandez is a very good player, but just not good enough to be worth €84 million. But Bayern Munich will shell out that astronomical amount for the 23-year old French centre-back. Barcelona have a lesson to learn from this.

Once upon a time, Barça were also interested in Lucas, before he had won the World Cup as a crucial part of France’s campaign in Russia. But the transfer never materialised, as Atlético were unwilling to let go of their young starlet.

A fee of €84 million has made them change their mind, but Lucas can never live up to his price tag, regardless of his performances at Allianz Arena. The same has been the case with Philippe Coutinho, who joined Barça in a €120 million deal from Liverpool last January.

The Brazilian forward is good, but not good enough to be worth €120 million. The pressure has got to Coutinho, and he is failing to perform up to expectations. Barça need to avoid making the same mistake again in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Antoine Griezmann is a prospective signing, and he is going to cost €120 million. At 27, the Frenchman has the potential to become a high-profile failure. So, Barça should not go after Griezmann as it involves a high risk factor associated with huge money.

The only big-money signing of a relatively low-profile player which has worked out, is that of Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool broke the transfer record for a defender to sign the Netherlands international, and it is working out well for the Reds.
