3. Luis Enrique bows out with a win

The 2017-18 season was a mixed bag for Barcelona. They went into the Clasico having been eliminated from the Champions League by Juventus. That elimination came after the comeback against PSG in the Camp Nou.

As if the elimination wasn’t bad enough, Luis Enrique had also announced that he was leaving Barcelona at the end of the season. Worse yet is Neymar wasn’t available after being sent off against Malaga.

Much of the theme of all these Clasicos is Lionel Messi stepping up and he did so once again.

Casemiro’s opener for Real Madrid was canceled out by Messi’s first goal of the evening. The Argentine zig-zagged inside the box wonderfully eluding the foot of Dani Carvajal. With gauze in his mouth after being struck by Marcelo, Messi tied the game.

Ivan Rakitic gave the team the lead with a powerful strike that Keylor Navas could do nothing to stop. It was a rare goal from the Croatian. Barcelona thought they had the match in hand following a red card to Sergio Ramos after a reckless lunge at Messi.

But James Rodriguez would tie the game with about ten minutes to spare. Barcelona needed to win the game to stay alive in the hunt for the LaLiga title.

Up a man, the Catalans were finally able to use it to their advantage as in added time, Sergi Roberto commenced a run from his own area bypassing a timid challenge by Marcelo. He ceded the ball to Andre Gomes who waited for the overlap by Jordi Alba. Alba cut the ball back inside and which found a marauding Messi who shot past Navas and broke the hearts of those in attendance.

It was a brilliant counterattack and capped off another exciting Clasico match. It also gave the world another iconic Messi celebration.

Black eye and bloody nose, none of that mattered in that moment.

Again, it was a weird season for the club. Here they were witnessing another iconic moment in club history. But along with the comeback against PSG, it wound not up meaning little in the long run as Madrid still went on to win the league. But it’s a moment one won’t soon forget.
